FAQs

1. What is the problem with the affected vehicles?

According to information provided by the manufacturer Takata, the gas generator of the affected Takata front airbags may rupture when the airbag is triggered during an accident if the propellant inside it displays signs of ageing due to extreme ambient influences. As a result, metal pieces of the gas generator can eject through the passenger compartment and severely injure the occupants.

2. What is the cause of the fault?

Takata perceives the cause to be possible ageing of the propellant under extreme conditions, for example under the influence of moisture and temperature. This can lead to accelerated propellant combustion in the gas generator. In turn, this may generate excessive pressure inside the generator, which may cause the housing to rupture. The change to the propellant can occur because of the effects of moisture and temperature over a long period.

4. Which vehicles are affected by the fault?

The following recall campaigns involve vehicles equipped with a driver front airbag manufactured by Takata:

  • For Recall Campaign 69BR (TAKATA driver airbag), the affected vehicles are Audi Q5, A5 Cabriolet and A5 Sportback models manufactured between 2009 and 2012.
  • For Recall Campaign 69S8 (TAKATA driver airbag), the affected vehicles are Audi TT and R8 models manufactured between 2014 and 2017.
  • For Recall Campaign 69R7 (TAKATA passenger airbag), the affected vehicles are Audi A4, A4 Cabriolet and A6 vehicles manufactured between 2005 and 2011.

5. What needs to be repaired in the car?

For Recall Campaign cases 69BR, the gas generator of the driver front airbag will be replaced with a component with a different propellant. For Recall Campaign case 69S8, the complete drive airbag module must be replaced on all vehicles affected. For Recall Campaign case 69R7, the complete front passenger airbag module must be replaced on all vehicles affected.

1. What is the problem with the affected vehicles?

The pressure cylinder of the curtain airbag can corrode over time if there is a problem with the water drain system for the panoramic sunroof, e.g. as a result of dirt.

2. What is the cause of the fault?

If the water drain in the panoramic sunroof is not functioning properly, water can seep into the vehicle's headliner. If enough moisture accumulates, the foam adjacent to the pressure cylinder of the curtain airbag can become wet. This can cause corrosion on the pressure cylinder.

3. What effect does the fault have? / What can happen?

The corrosion can cause the pressure cylinder of the curtain airbag to rupture.

4. Which vehicles are affected by the fault?

The affected vehicles are Audi Q5 models manufactured from May 2010 to August 2016.

5. What exactly needs to be repaired in the car?

The vehicle will first be checked for water seepage in the area of the panoramic sunroof and for proper water drainage from the panoramic sunroof. The surface of the pressure cylinders of the curtain airbags will then be inspected for corrosion, the adjacent foam will be removed, and anti-corrosion wax will be applied to the pressure cylinder. If corrosion is already present, the curtain airbag will be replaced.

General FAQs

Yes, you can drive the car until the repair is carried out. As part of the recall campaign, Audi recommends having the replacement work performed as soon as possible at an Audi Partner once the replacement parts are available.

We were informed of the process discrepancy and this potential problem by our supplier. It was also the result of individual customer complaints and in-house tests and simulations which are part of our continuous product monitoring programme.

For cases 69BR, 69S8 and 69R7: No, we are not aware of a single instance in which the gas generator for the driver airbag in an Audi vehicle has ruptured. For case 69P1, we are aware of a few individual cases.

No, Audi AG is not aware of any cases of this kind.

No.

For cases 69P1 and 69R7, the vehicle's passengers can be injured if the pressure cylinder ruptures. To date, we are not aware of any cases resulting from the fault.

The repair can be carried out by any Audi Partner in the affected countries.
